BUNDABERG EVENTS

August 29 to Sept.11 – Carnarvan National Park

This walk originally scheduled for April was postponed due to the heavy rains at the time.

Richard is planning a visit to both the Mt. Moffat and The Gorge sections of this National Park.  Those wishing to make this outing could ring Richard (4152 2402) for more information. He is asking that those going make their own way to Injune and be there by August 29. He will be driving from Injune to Mt. Moffatt on Mon. August 30, and will return to Injune for an overnight stay on Monday September 6. The drive to The Gorge will be on Tuesday September 7. We will be camping at the Takarakka Camp ground until the following weekend (3 nights). This should be a great outing and there will be more information on this later. Richard’s planning for this trip is well under way and he asks that anyone intending to go, please contact him as some bookings will have to be made. He can also advise camping cost at both Mt. Moffatt and also at the Takarakka camp grounds and also what other items would need to be carried into the Mt. Moffatt area. A copy of full program with costs etc. will be available to those nominating to go. Bookings are necessary at Takarakka and the Club has made such booking and has paid a 50% deposit. The cost of such camping is $17/person/night. Would those going please get this money in to our Treasurer Fay please!

September 5 – Monduran Dam Area (Hard Walk)(S1a – Pack 2)

This walk has had to be cancelled due to the unavailability of the nominated leader. As an alternative, it is suggested that anyone interested may like to do a longer walk from the Burnett Heads Lighthouse south past The Oaks Beach and on to Mon Repos or even to Bargara and return. The easy walk on this day will also start from the Lighthouse picnic area. Allison will lead this walk to depart from the Quay Street car park at 8.00am. Ring Allison if interested (4152 5072)

September 5 – Burnett Heads to Bundaberg Port (Easy walk)(S1a – Pack 2)

Verlie will lead this walk to depart from the Quay Street car Park at 8.00am. For more information ring Verlie (4152 8885).

September 14 – AGM and Monthly Meeting

7.30pm at Bundaberg State High School Library. We will be looking for fresh faces in a number of executive positions. Please talk among yourselves and give thought to accepting a position on the club executive.

September 18/19 – Overnight Walk Waterfall Ck to Mt. Walsh

The walk will be about 18km starting from Waterfall Creek Car Park working our way towards Mt Walsh and down to its car park. This will be a hard walk and will climb about 520m over 2 days through dense vegetation patches, about 450m vertical and 9km in distance will be done over the first day (5.5% grade) which I anticipate to be the hardest. There is no defined walking track for this trip, we will be making our way using map, compass and GPS and suitable overnight pack will be required. I do not recommend carrying too much weight in your packs as the terrain may make the walk overly difficult otherwise, this is important. Based on previous experience, sufficient water will need to be carried for the duration of this trip, as permanent water is only available at waterholes on the first day. A max of 12-15kg including sufficient food and water is recommended. We will camp in the bush overnight, temperatures at this time of year may get to around 5 degrees. If you have not completed hard walks previously please do not start with this one. No reconnaissance has been undertaken for this trip, I have previously walked both ends of this route, as such the planned route I have chosen using topographic maps is subject to change on the day. Radios and PLB (Personal Location Beacons in case of emergency) will be with us and as this isn’t a loop walk at least one vehicle will need to be dropped off for overnight park at Mt Walsh to ferry the rest of us back to the vehicles on finish. Fires are not permitted so fuel stoves only. I will contact the ranger prior to the walk to discuss conditions and any planned burn offs, if rain has occurred we will not be descending Mt Walsh due to the granite rocks which can get quite slippery.  As there is is a little uncertainty on the condition of our path, I plan to leave Bundaberg 9:00am on the Saturday and plan to be finished by 4pm at Biggenden on the Sunday. If you have any questions please contact Dwayne on 0408 163 654 and I can provide further info, if you’ve done a hard walk with me before and think you are physically capable then this will be a great little adventure, considering humans can easily walk 4.5km/hour on flat terrain hopefully I can get a couple of you to come with me at least 🙂
